Dental Implants Start to Finish

Dental implant process

For those who are missing one or more teeth, dental implants are an ideal way to quickly fix the smile and ensure that the teeth don’t move over time. Some shy away from the process of obtaining a dental implant because they are nervous about dental work, but the reality is that it can be a simple treatment with great results.

Bone Grafting

In some situations, there may not be enough jawbone to support the implant. If this is true, your dentist may opt to do a bone graft. They can take several months and may be made of synthetic bones or natural bones from another place in the body. The condition of the jawbone determines if a bone graft is necessary.

Placing the Implant

If there is no need for a bone graft, the implant is placed first. This is done when a small cut is placed to expose the bone and open the gums. The implant is a small titanium rod that is then placed in the gums. It functions as the new root of the tooth.

Bone Growth

Once the implant is placed in the jawbone, the bone and metal grow and unite together. This process can take several months but creates a solid, steady foundation for a new tooth.

Placing the Abutment

Next, the abutment is placed. This is the spot where the crown will eventually be attached. The gums are re-opened, and the abutment is attached to the newly exposed dental implant. Then the gum tissue is closed around the abutment.

New Teeth

Once the gums heal after the placing of the abutment, it is time to choose your new teeth. You can opt for fixed or removable implants. The crown is made of an impression taken of your mouth so it fits perfectly, and the color can be chosen to match the surrounding teeth.
