Chandler Sedation Dentist

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off dental care. That’s a shame because small dental problems get worse over time. Many patients realize that but can’t overcome their fear of the dentist, so they miss out on regular cleanings and routine dental maintenance. For these patients, sedation is often the answer.

Novocain alone often doesn’t work for very fearful patients. However, combined with a sedative, it’s extremely effective. Patients who hate needles won’t even notice the novocain injection. If you need hours of dental work, sedation will make that time pass in a flash. Sedation is also helpful if you have:

  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • Difficulty sitting still
  • Certain disabilities

At your initial visit, Dr. Walden will talk to you about your health. Most people are candidates for sedation dentistry, but some medical conditions are disqualifying.

Time-Tested Dental Sedatives

Our office offers three types of sedative: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. The one you choose will depend on your level of anxiety and your dental needs. The sedative medications vary in strength and how long they last, but each has a proven track record of effectiveness and safety.

Nitrous Oxide

You may have heard of nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas. At the beginning of your appointment, we will place a mask over your nose that emits nitrous oxide gas. As you breathe it in, you will begin to feel relaxed and tranquil. When Dr. Walden has finished working on your mouth, he will administer oxygen through the mask, which will clear the laughing gas from your system. You will be awake, alert, and ready to drive home or return to work.

Oral Sedation

If oral sedation is best for you, Dr. Walden will prescribe a pill for you to take before your appointment. After taking the pill, you’ll feel groggy. You probably won’t remember your appointment, though you’ll answer questions and follow commands during it. You may sleep, but you’ll wake easily. You will need someone to take you home after your visit since it will be several hours before you can safely drive. Your vital signs will be monitored during your appointment.

IV Sedation

Some patients are so anxious that nitrous oxide or oral sedation alone isn’t strong enough. These patients may need IV sedation.

If IV sedation is right for you, you will be instructed not to eat or drink for a number of hours before your appointment. When you arrive, Dr. Walden will place a temporary intravenous line in your arm. Then, he’ll administer precise amounts of sedative medication through the line to ensure you feel no stress or pain during the procedure. Your vital signs will also be monitored during the procedure. After IV sedation, you will need a friend or family member to take you home.

Safe Sedation Dentistry with an Experienced Provider

Dr. Walden was an early pioneer of sedation dentistry among Arizona general dentists. He is a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and completed advanced training in IV sedation at UCLA.

Though you won’t form new memories while you’re sedated, you’ll still be conscious and breathing normally. We’ll monitor your vital signs throughout your treatment.

Often anxious patients worry they will be lectured at the dentist. If you’ve been putting off dental care, there’s no need to feel embarrassed when visiting our office. We are here to help you and improve your dental health without any judgment. To schedule an appointment, please call our office at 480-755-1661 or use this form. If you have questions but aren’t ready to schedule an appointment, you can also request a brief complimentary consultation with Dr. Walden.
