Do I Need a Bridge for a Broken Front Root Canal Tooth?

Posted by AllSmiles

My upper left front tooth broke after getting a root canal treatment. My dentist used a metal screw post as a temporary crown. I feel dullness in my nasal cavity, but it doesn’t hurt. Is the screw a long-term solution instead of a dental bridge? – Thanks. Nathan from Ft. Lauderdale

Nathan,

You’ve mentioned concerns about a screw post in a central incisor. While these posts are generally secure, they can pressure the root, potentially leading to fractures.

The dull feeling in your nasal cavity could indicate a cracked root. However, waiting and observing are essential, as this symptom might resolve without intervention.

A broken front tooth at the gumline presents a significant challenge. Many dentists consider it unrestorable due to the rotational forces that can loosen the crown and post over time. While a dentist can place a crown on the remaining tooth, there’s a risk of failure. The best option would be to proceed with the crown and hope for the best. However, be prepared for the possibility of needing further treatment in the future.

A flipper partial could be more affordable if a bridge is not financially feasible. This removable appliance can replace the missing tooth.

In hindsight, it might have been beneficial for your dentist to place a simple post in the tooth after the root canal treatment for additional support and fracture prevention.

Consult your dentist to discuss these options.
