Should I Switch Dentists If a Bone Graft Failed?

Posted by AllSmiles

My general dentist has placed hundreds of dental implants, so I trusted her to place two implants in my lower left teeth. She said that one tooth required bone grafting. After the graft healed, my dentist attempted the implant but said she needed to remove it because the bone was too shallow. She said I needed another graft or a dental bridge. The other dental implant is fine, but I’m unsure about my dentist’s bone grafting experience. I didn’t think to ask about it since she has placed so many implants. I probably should switch dentists. Could I have avoided this problem by seeing a specialist? Thank you. Margo from Utah

Margo,

Dental implantology is not a formally recognized specialty in dentistry. However, certain dentists possess advanced training, and oral surgeons and periodontists specialize in surgical procedures.

While a dentist may have significant experience with implants, bone grafting is a complex procedure that often requires additional expertise. Your dentist may be relatively new to this specific aspect of implant dentistry. As any professional expands their skill set, they may encounter challenges.

A less conscientious dentist might have proceeded with the implant placement, potentially leading to short-term success but long-term failure. Therefore, your dentist’s decision to prioritize a successful outcome is commendable. Successful dental implants require enough healthy bone to thrive.

Your dentist is transparent with you and seems confident in the outcome. A dental bridge or a dental implant may be an option for a single-tooth replacement, each with advantages and disadvantages. However, you can get a second opinion. If you prefer the implant option, consider seeking a referral to a periodontist or oral surgeon with extensive experience in implant surgery.
