Invisalign is a clear braces system that realigns your teeth gradually over a 6- to 12-month period. It uses clear aligners that are made of plastic and designed precisely for your mouth. Dr. Beavers prefers the SureSmile clear braces system to Invisalign because it is more efficient—there are fewer corrections during the course of treatment, making treatment time shorter. Besides that, it is less expensive.

SureSmile and Invisalign Treatment

The process for SureSmile is the same as for Invisalign. At your first appointment, we’ll take digital impressions of your mouth using our intraoral scanner. This small pen-shaped device will record every detail of your mouth.

Using these digital impressions and SureSmile’s proprietary design software, Dr. Beavers will create a series of invisible braces that will move your teeth a tiny bit at a time until they’re straight.

At your next appointment, Dr. Beavers will try out the new invisible braces in your mouth. SureSmile clear braces put mild tension and pressure on teeth that are out of alignment until they shift to their new position. Consequently, they will feel like they don’t quite fit. Don’t worry—that’s by design. After a couple of days, your teeth will adjust and the fit will feel natural. Over the next two weeks, new bone will form in your jaw to support this new position. When the two weeks are over, you’ll switch to the next pair of aligners and repeat the process.

Take out the SureSmile aligners when you eat, and then be sure to clean your teeth and put them back in.

It’s very important to wear your clear braces for 20 to 22 hours each day. Otherwise, when it’s time to switch to the next set of braces, your teeth won’t be in the right place. So while the SureSmile process is simpler and easier than traditional braces, it still requires some commitment. You’ll also need to return to the office about once a month so Dr. Beavers can check your progress and make any necessary adjustments.

Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces

Patients prefer clear aligner systems like SureSmile over traditional braces for many reasons. The most obvious advantage is aesthetic. Unless they’re closely examining your mouth, no one will be able to see the invisible aligners.

Clear aligners have other advantages over traditional braces too:

• They contain no metal or wire.
• They’re completely smooth and won’t irritate your gums, cheeks, or tongue.
• They work up to twice as fast as standard braces and require fewer office visits.
• They don’t interfere with your oral hygiene. Food particles tend to accumulate around traditional braces, so flossing becomes very time-consuming.

SureSmile and Invisalign don’t work for everyone. You may need traditional braces if you have unerupted teeth in your mouth or severe dental crowding.
