Why You Need To Restore Your Root Canal With a Crown

Posted by clburke

If you’re having intense pain in one of your teeth, especially when you expose the tooth to hot or cold foods and drinks, you may need a root canal. It’s rare for a healthy tooth to get an infection in the root, but when a tooth is compromised by decay, cracks or other damage, bacteria can enter into the sensitive pulp and cause inflammation in the root. Endodontic procedures to clean out infected tooth roots are generally recommended to prevent the spread of infection and restore the function and appearance of the smile.

The Role of Dental Crowns in Root Canal Procedures

There are many different reasons the pulp of a tooth can become infected and require a root canal, including:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • A broken, cracked or fractured tooth
  • A tooth that has repeatedly had cavities or infections
  • An injured tooth

Your dentist may be able to save a portion of your tooth’s visible structure (the part you can see above the gum line), but you will most likely need a dental crown to fully restore the tooth. Dental crowns are typically constructed out of porcelain and are designed to protect the damaged tooth structure from further infection and decay. They also lend support to the remaining tooth and improve aesthetic appearance. If a dental crown is not placed on top of the treated tooth after a root canal, the tooth will most likely fail.

Dr. William Walden uses advanced technology to create lifelike dental crowns that are both attractive and durable. He tints and shapes each crown to match the teeth around it. Once the procedure is complete, the dental crown looks just like one of your natural teeth.
